9-1-1 Information

What is the 9-1-1 Center 10-digit telephone number?

When 9-1-1 is dialed it’s automatically dialing  a 10-digit telephone number  i.e. 503-555-5555. This is the number SafeOregon will need. This has to be the 24 hour access number, not the business office.

Why is information on our local 9-1- 1 Center requested?

In the rare instance SafeOregon may need to dial 9-1- 1 because of information we receive or the need to connect a student who didn’t call 9-1- 1 directly for any reason, we want to do that swiftly and without delay.

Can’t anyone dial 9-1- 1 and connect?

Yes, but, anytime someone dials 9-1- 1, the caller is connected to the Primary “Public Safety Answering Point” (PSAP) also known as a 9-1- 1 Center, for the location they are dialing from. SafeOregon serves schools all across the state and several 9-1- 1 Center’s serve the state.

What is a Secondary 9-1- 1 Center?

Each 9-1- 1 Center also has a secondary or back-up 9-1- 1 Center should the primary have a system failure of any kind. Providing this information ensures we have everything we need to serve students in your school in case of an emergency.

How do schools find the Primary and Secondary 9-1- 1 information?

You could start here, a resource provided by Oregon Emergency Management (copy and paste in your browser) https://www.oregon.gov/OMD/OEM/or911/docs/psap_directory.pdf.  We highly encourage you to validate this information by contacting your County or City public safety agencies listed or by reviewing their websites and information, confer with your local law enforcement, or call the non-emergency line at your 9-1- 1 Center to confirm the information for accuracy. Make sure you are using current information.

Would a school ever use this information for other purposes?

Yes, you may. This is helpful information for your school to have onsite at your front office or in your safety procedures, so staff can always reach the 9-1- 1 Center if for any reason dialing 9-1-1 doesn’t work you have the 10 digit number to use.

Is SafeOregon a replacement for dialing 9-1- 1?

No. Students should always be encouraged to dial 9-1- 1 for any emergency. However, a student may not realize the tip or information they have prompts a 9-1- 1 response. SafeOregon may talk with someone in distress who needs a 9-1- 1 response and we need to be able to do that quickly if they cannot do it for themselves.
